If proof were ever needed of how time-poor, information-overloaded and prone to distraction we’ve all become, the visual abstract has become a valuable tool in drawing readers’ attention to the latest journal research articles. The added value that visual abstracts bring has grown immensely, thanks to the ability to share and increase exposure on social media – especially on Twitter. This helps to grab attention and start a conversation among a wider field of interested readers, in a way that would simply never have happened 20 years ago.
