I love language and the way in which we use words.

I also love the sea, and everything in it and on it.

I grew up a few miles from Portsmouth on the south coast of England, which is steeped in royal naval history and all things nautical, and absorbed the triumph, drama and tragedy of the Battle of Trafalgar, naval tradition, and glorious painted seascapes with ships in full sail. So I was delighted to stumble upon this entertaining guide to the multitude of nautical terms in the English language, via David Crotty’s recent post in ‘The Scholarly Kitchen’ (https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2024/10/11/ahoy-why-is-english-awash-in-nautical-terms/), which explains where these nautical terms came from and why they are still so much in use today.

So if you’re feeling under the weather, try a different tack and come out with flying colours!
