Did you know that Saturday 13 April is National Scrabble Day? Well, now you do!
I was something of a latecomer to Scrabble, as there was never a tradition of playing it in my family. I still remember my childish triumph at my first emphatic win, against my next-door neighbour’s son, at the age of twelve. I’m still completely unbearable if I win at Scrabble: I feel as if I’m making up for lost time enjoying a game that so completely engages me, absolutely nothing else matters until I hit a triple word score or use all my tiles to spell ‘xenobiotic’ or ‘zoonosis’.
